Cuyamaca Indian Legend
There is a lovely Indian legend about the
Cuyamaca Mountains.
A great many years ago all of the mountain
peaks lived happily together. Mountains could talk, you know, and so
they talked and laughed together. Later they began to quarrel.
Corte Madera was the littlest mountain peak.
He was very timid. He did not want to quarrel so he took a few of the
pine trees and chokeberry bushes and went off by himself.
Mt. Laguna was a big strong mountain peak,
but he felt that he was being pushed. So he took some trees and went
off by himself to set up his kingdom. He took pine trees and cedar trees
and chokeberry bushes, but he went away in such a hurry that he didn't
take any of the fir trees.
So Cuyamaca is the only mountain in that
area that has many fir trees.
